At least 21 people have died after a tragic road crash involving a school bus carrying mourners near the Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu on Friday evening.

The bus, owned by AIC Naki High School, was travelling from Kakamega to Kisumu when it lost control and plunged into a ditch around 5 pm.

Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina said the driver appeared to have lost control as the vehicle neared the roundabout.

“The driver appeared to lose control of the vehicle as it approached the roundabout, crossed into the opposite lane, and plunged into a ditch,” he explained.

Among those killed were 10 women, 10 men, and a 10-year-old girl. The bus was reportedly transporting passengers coming from a funeral, but officials are still investigating the exact details of the trip.

Five people were seriously injured and are receiving treatment, while 15 others, including a child, suffered minor injuries. All the victims have been admitted to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu.

Maina noted that the cause of the crash remains under investigation. “The cause of the accident is still under investigation. We’re waiting for mechanical experts to examine the bus and help establish what led to the loss of control,” he said.

The identities of those who died and those injured have not yet been officially released. The accident has shocked the region and raised urgent calls for stronger safety measures, especially regarding transport for school children.

Police have secured the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
